Physical Development: Biology of a thoroughbred

By approximately 2 years of age, a Thoroughbred’s leg bones have reached maturity with growth plates of the lower legs (cannon bones, knees, hocks) closing between 18 and 24 months of age.

At this stage, the horse has achieved ~95–98% of its adult height, and its basic skeletal structure is fully formed. While the spine and some other areas continue developing until around 5-6 years, the limbs of a 2-year-old are are capable of bearing work, especially if conditioned for it.

Training: Bone strengthening with exercise

Equine bones remodel and strengthen in response to load. 

Veterinary surgeon Dr. Larry Bramlage describes bone as a training-responsive tissue: “Bone trains to the level of work, not the amount. The cardiovascular system trains to the amount of work. The limiting system is always the skeleton in the horse.”

Extensive research supports the responsible training and racing of two-year-old Thoroughbreds, particularly because of how their developing musculoskeletal systems respond to exercise. A controlled study found foals given additional exercise developed greater bone size and strength in their legs compared to those only at pasture.

This is because during the peripubescent period (around 18–24 months of age), a horse’s limb bones are more biologically primed to remodel in response to pressure forces. So when a young horse is gradually introduced to speed work, its bones adapt by laying down more mineral and reshaping to better withstand the demands of racing.

Injury Incidence Data: Lower than other age groups

Comprehensive U.S. statistics from The Jockey Club’s Equine Injury Database (EID) show that 2-year-olds have some of the lowest fatal injury rates of any age group in racing.

In 2023, the fatality rate for 2-year-olds was 0.79 per 1,000 starts – significantly lower than the rates for 3-year-olds (1.37) and 4-year-olds and up (1.38). These findings are based on hundreds of thousands of starts recorded by the EID.

Non-fatal injuries like shin soreness or mild tendon stress are expected as horses adapt to training but are rarely career-ending and can be effectively managed.

Data from the Equine Injury Database shows that in 2020, when COVID‑19 disrupted early training schedules, 2-year-old fatality rates spiked above older cohorts, despite a clear downward trend before and after. This anomaly underlines how delays or inconsistencies in early training can raise risk.

Longevity: Career outcomes

Multiple independent studies have found a positive correlation between racing at 2 and racing longevity.

Decades of veterinary research (from the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and others) underpin current practices, and top veterinarians like Dr. Larry Bramlage, Dr. Wayne McIlwraith, and Dr. Chris Rogers have spoken out to dispel myths about 2-year-old racing.

No peer-reviewed study has found that carefully training and racing Thoroughbreds at two causes long-term harm.

Key Messages

Vets agree 2-year-old racing is beneficial

The scientific and regulatory consensus in the U.S. is that racing a well-prepared 2-year-old is an acceptable practice backed by data, with the caveat that trainers must introduce young horses to racing cautiously and individually, as not every horse develops at the same rate.

Equal or lower fatality rates

Every year since data collection began in 2009, the industry has scrutinized whether racing at age two carries extra risk. The evidence says it does not.

Year after year, the fatal breakdown rate for 2-year-olds is typically lower than that of older horses.

The progressive training process for juveniles (graduating from short breezes to longer works) helps condition their legs before they face the stresses of full racing.

Earlier start = Longer career

This data is definitive. Multiple large-scale studies in different countries have found a strong association between 2-year-old racing and better career outcomes, including more lifetime races and higher earnings. It shows that horses that began racing as 2-year-olds are much more successful, have much longer careers, and, by extrapolation, show less predisposition to injury than horses that did not begin racing until their 3-year-old year.

It is absolute on all the data sets that the training and racing of 2-year-old Thoroughbreds has no ill effect on the horses’ race-career longevity or quality.

 

Possible Questions

It’s a common concern, but while 2-year-olds sound young, biologically they’re in a crucial stage of development where appropriate training actually benefits their long-term soundness.

Horses are precocial animals, meaning they’re born ready to move – standing within an hour and cantering in hours. By 18 to 24 months of age, their bones are still developing – and that’s exactly when they’re most responsive to exercise.

Introducing speed work gradually during this stage helps bones remodel for strength, laying down more mineral and adapting their shape to better withstand future racing forces.

Research has shown that horses trained and raced at two tend to have stronger bones, longer careers, and more total starts than those who begin later.

That said, not every 2-year-old is ready to race. Trainers and veterinarians assess each horse individually for maturity, temperament, conformation, and soundness. Many are held back from racing but still benefit from early training. Even without competing, controlled exercise during this developmental window helps condition bones, tendons, and soft tissue, laying a stronger foundation for when they are ready. 

Not necessarily a disadvantage in ability, some late-bloomers turn out great, but statistically, horses that miss their 2-year-old season have shorter careers than those that race at two. 

Physically, waiting until three doesn’t confer any special advantage; in fact, as we discussed, it may mean the horse’s bones are just now encountering racing stress without prior adaptation.

However, it’s also true that some horses just need more time, maybe they are slow to grow, or had minor setbacks, or the connections chose a patient approach. Those horses can still be successful (plenty of stakes winners debuted at three).

Each horse should be brought along when ready, but if a horse is sound and mature at two, there’s no evidence-based reason to deliberately hold it back until three. It’s often better for the horse to go ahead and gain that experience and conditioning in the latter half of its two-year-old year.

According to extensive veterinary research, early racing in itself is not a cause of long-term soundness issues, and it may even prevent some problems by strengthening tissues early.

Studies comparing horses that raced at two versus those that didn’t have not found higher rates of arthritis or chronic injuries in the early starters. 

In fact, early exercise can have protective effects on joints. Research (including work by Dr. Wayne McIlwraith and colleagues) suggests that moderate exercise at a young age leads to stronger cartilage and tendon tissues, potentially reducing injury risk later.

Of course, any racehorse, whether started at 2, 3, or 4, can develop wear-and-tear injuries over time. Racing is a strenuous activity, and issues like osteoarthritis, tendonitis, etc., can appear in horses as they age and accumulate starts. But there’s no evidence that those chronic issues are worse in horses who ran at two.

Much like human teenagers who start intense athletic training, young horses go through an adaptation phase.

Initially, a 2-year-old in race training might experience some soreness. For example, shin soreness (inflammation in the cannon bone) is common enough that it’s almost considered a normal part of a young racehorse’s development.

These ailments are usually addressed with rest or light exercise and they resolve as the horse’s body adapts. The process at work is called remodeling: when a bone or tendon is stressed by exercise, the body responds by laying down new bone or strengthening fibers during the recovery period. 

So each workout essentially tells the horse’s musculoskeletal system, “get stronger, we’re going to do this again.” Over a few months, the horse “toughens up”. Its cannon bones for instance will develop dorsal cortical thickness (to better resist bending), and fetlock joints will stabilize with stronger supporting ligaments. Scientifically, early training has been shown to upregulate collagen content in tendons and improve the quality of cartilage in joints, making them more resilient.

Also, keep in mind Thoroughbreds are bred for this with decades of selective breeding producing horses with the capacity to adapt quickly to speed work at a young age. We often see 2-year-olds improve dramatically from spring to fall as they grow muscle and bone in response to racing. The important part is that trainers give them enough time to recover between workouts (to allow the strengthening to happen) and don’t over-train to the point of injury. 

When managed correctly, a young horse’s body copes by rebuilding itself stronger- literally “growing up” into a racehorse through controlled stress and recovery.

Not differently in terms of rules, all ages race under the same safety and integrity regulations, but there are some extra precautions inherently taken with young horses. Rules on medication, track surface standards, jockey weight assignments, and veterinary inspections apply equally to 2-year-olds as to older horses. Every 2-year-old must pass the same pre-race soundness exams by veterinarians.

Additionally, there are some age-specific conditions: 2-year-olds carry lighter weights in races (often around 118 lbs, compared to 122+ for older) to account for their stage of development. They are also limited in the distances they run, early in the 2YO season, races are usually short (4½ or 5 furlongs, gradually lengthening to maybe a mile late in the year) because it would be too demanding to ask a newly turned 2YO to run, say, a mile and a quarter. 

These practices aren’t so much “special regulations” as industry norms to ease horses into racing. 

Some jurisdictions require that a 2-year-old have a certain number of official workouts and a gate approval before it can debut, to ensure it’s ready. Overall, the regulatory framework treats horse safety as paramount regardless of age, and the same improvements (like better track maintenance and injury monitoring) benefit 2-year-olds just as they do older horses.

 

Very common. In the U.S., virtually all Thoroughbred race meets offer races for 2-year-olds, usually beginning in the spring or summer each year. The majority of racehorses will start their career at age 2 or 3.

There are also high-profile 2-year-old specific events: for example, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies are Grade 1 races that essentially crown the champion 2-year-olds each year.

Additionally, sales for 2-year-olds in training (where young horses breeze a furlong or two for buyers) are a major part of the bloodstock market, indicating how much the industry expects horses to be active at two. Culturally, racing a horse at two is seen as normal in the U.S. (and in many other racing countries like England, Australia, Japan, etc.), whereas waiting until 4 or 5 would be extremely late.
